Leadership Licensure Program for Superintendents

Teachers 21 has offered a licensure program for aspiring superintendents since 2009.  Partner organizations are the Boston College Lynch School of Education, Massachusetts Association of School Administrators (MASA), Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association (MSSAA), and Massachusetts Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (MASCD).  The program fulfills the requirements for a Massachusetts license as a superintendent/assistant superintendent.  With 39 additional credits, the program can meet the requirements for an Ed. D. from Boston College, if an aspiring superintendent desires such a degree.

Courses are taught by highly experienced school leaders who have successful track records leading schools and districts as well as distinguished Boston College professors.  Over three years, the licensure program combines an annual two-week summer institute at Boston College with monthly instructional sessions on Fridays and Saturdays at the offices of the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators Association in Franklin (MA).

Curriculum and Practicum

Curriculum modules are taught concurrently with a 300-hour practicum so candidates can apply the course content in district settings.  Candidates work under the supervision of a superintendent or other school administrator and have regular opportunities for feedback, assessment, and reflection.  Problem based activities often support the six instructional modules:

  • DNA of Leadership
  • Skills of Powerful Leadership
  • Instructional Leadership for Learning
  • Cultural Proficiency
  • Special Education, 504, and Related Issues
  • Superintendent, School Committee and Union Partnerships and Issues

Testimonials

“The LLPS program has not only enriched my own personal growth and professional development, but has provided me with the hands-on skills and knowledge that has reshaped my daily practice. The instructors are top notch practitioners and the cohort model provides a supportive learning community.  This has been the best learning experience I have had in my twenty-five years in education.  I highly recommend this program to anyone looking to lead a school district or simply improve their own professional practice as a school leader.”
