Turnaround Leadership Initiative
Fifty-four educators—hailing from Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and abroad—have applied to the Turnaround Leadership Academy this spring. Group interviews representing the second stage of the admissions process were held in March; 22 candidates have been invited for individual interviews which are underway now. As additional Massachusetts districts learn about the program and propose candidates, the admissions process has been extended and applications are still welcomed.
Teachers21 is involved in ongoing intensive planning with the NYC Leadership Academy to shape this rigorous training program that has been funded by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education with Race to the Top funds. The training program is offered at low cost to districts with a commitment to closing the achievement gap and will prepare experienced and aspiring principals to lead the highest need schools in Massachusetts. It begins with a summer intensive in the month of July—three weeks for experienced principals and four for aspiring principals—and leads to certification for those who do not already have this credential. Tailored to the realities of Massachusetts schools and the reform agenda articulated here, the program builds on the successful principal preparation program that was launched thirteen years ago for the New York City schools under Chancellor Joe Klein. Ongoing research on this training program indicates that the more than 400 graduates of the New York City Leadership Academy are implementing practices that have had a profound impact on student performance.
Teachers21 will continue to accept applications from qualified applicants who are likely candidates for support from their districts. Districts must have one or several Level 3 and Level 4 schools where their experienced principals are or will be assigned; they must be able to offer a one-year residency experience in a Level 3 or Level 4 school to their aspiring principal(s). Support, coaching, and ongoing professional development will be provided throughout the year to both the experienced and aspiring principals. The candidates aspiring to the principalship will receive a second year of coaching once they are appointed to lead a high-need school.
