As an organization that specializes in providing professional development and expert consultation to school and district leaders, Teachers21 delivered ESE-designed training modules, trained and coached evaluators, and assisted for over 150 districts with planning and implementation during the initial rollout of the new Massachusetts framework for supervision and evaluation.

Since the initial rollout we have been working with districts in a variety of ways to help them deepen their implementation of the new supervision and evaluation system and to convert the energy that has been invested to date into impact on teacher and student learning. Our supervision and evaluation strength training program, designed to foster proficient growth for all educators, includes, but is not limited to:

  • SMART goals 2.0: creating the conditions in which teachers are safe to set rigorous goals that challenge themselves, and each other, to grow, and using their Educator Plans to help shape, refine and support that growth.
  • Improving observations and gathering evidence: expanding the toolkit of effective, efficient techniques for gathering focused, useful data during observations.
  • Improving feedback and conversations: using post observation conversations to improve learning and encourage reflection for adults, and to build the capacity of supervisors to effectively engage in "difficult conversations" when needed.
  • Improving written feedback: using written feedback to provide specific information, capture teacher ideas and supervisor suggestions that lead to improved instruction.
  • Develop effective routines for supervision: sharing best practices for making efficient use of time and prioritizing time to regularly conduct unannounced observations.
  • High impact peer observations: Using peer observations to improve learning for both the observer and the observed.
  • Using DDMs to achieve learning objectives: recognizing how DDMs, and the process of developing them, can increase the number of students that meet and exceed your growth expectations.

 

Turning Supervision and Evaluation into Professional Growth

The new Massachusetts Educator Evaluation Framework places student learning at the center of the supervision and evaluation process and provides an opportunity to advance leadership and learning throughout school systems. Teachers21 customizes our programs to build on each district's strengths and situational needs, and provides the technical content and adaptive skills required to effectively implement the system.

It is essential that administrators take an active role in educating, modeling and supporting their staff to implement the new framework and practices; therefore, our primary audience for training is school and district leadership. We also cultivate the active involvement of key teacher leaders. Teachers21 consultants work to prepare administrators with skills and knowledge around the framework, and then collaborate with them to successfully introduce new practices and policies to their staff.

Our program includes consultation, workshops, coaching and planning by consultants – current or former superintendents, assistant superintendents and principals – who have extensive experience with supervision and evaluation and the many tools and rubrics that support this new framework.

 

Program Components

Our work focuses on areas that include:

Mapping the major aspects of the new supervision and evaluation framework to district goals

  • Fostering a culture of authentic self-assessment
  • Using the rubric to develop a common vocabulary and a shared vision of high quality teaching and learning
  • Gaining fluency in using multiple measures of learning, growth, and improvement

Establishing a culture of continuous self-improvement

  • Developing a "growth" mindset where adults and students value and actively seek feedback
  • Building collaboration, communication and trust
  • Recycling errors and mistakes into learning
  • Encouraging experimentation and risk taking for teachers and students

Evaluating impact

  • Formulating team and individual SMART goals aimed at high probability influences on student performance
  • Developing a range of artifacts and other forms of evidence of adult learning and growth
  • Creating District Determined Measures that fairly reflect educators' impact on student learning
